FAF #8

Highlights:

•  We had the opportunity to meet author, G. C. McRae! He read us some of the books he wrote: The Tooth, Party Ballerina, and The Cannibal Anaconda. 

• If you would like to order a book from him, he will be in our school again next week (Wednesday, Nov. 20), so you can fill out an order form (see below) - these will be available if you ask Mrs. Yoon or Mrs. Kidd on Monday. 

• We also met up with our big buddies and had some reading time together!

Our big buddies learned about how to read to an audience, so they were practicing their reading skills on us! Then, we had the opportunity to share a book that we chose and read to our big buddies. 

• For outdoor learning, we went on a color hunt! Using various color samples, we had to go outside to find those colors in nature. It was really fun!

 This was a dark reddish-brown

 This was a deep red

 This was a light yellow

 This was a light grey

 This was light orange

We found so many different colors in nature from things such as the leaves, berries, and grass! 

• For science we learned where colors come from! White light is made up of all of the colors of the rainbow. Rainbows are made when light passes through the water droplets in the air and the light splits into the different colors. Here is a fun song we watched to help us remember the colors: ROYGBIV
• We painted a rainbow using the "ROY G BIV" letters:

• We also learned that things look like they are certain colors because they absorb (take in) some colors and reflect (give off) other colors. The colors that we see are the colors that are reflected. 
• So if a leaf looks red, it is because the leaf is reflecting red. 
• If something is white, it is because they are reflecting all of the colors. 
• If something is black it is because they are reflecting none of the colors (they are absorbing all of the colors)

• We also added up our minutes of movement break, and the total came to 29 minutes! We were not able to meet our goal of 45 minutes, so we are going to try for it again next week :)

• CBC Music Challenge Dress Rehearsal is on Tuesday, Nov.19, from 1-2pm
• Filming for the CBC Music Challenge will take place the morning of November 20 (10:45-11:45am)- final work will be submitted on November 25, 2019.  Go Dr. Coffin Students!  
• Parent Teacher Conferences will take place Thursday, November 21, 2019 from 4 pm to 8 pm and Friday, November 22, 2019 from 8 am to 12 pm.  You will be able to book a 15-minute conference starting at 6 am on Saturday, November 16, 2019 until 6 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2019.
• Starting next week, we will be practicing "Soft Entry" (Students will be introduced to the "Soft Entry" plan on Monday and will learn the expectations for it over the next two weeks)
• Soft Entry will officially begin on Dec 2nd

Week 11

Highlights:

• This week we decided make our wellness goal focus on movement breaks again! To try to beat the number of minutes we had for movement break from last week our goal this week is 45 minutes - but we only have four days this week so it is a super challenge. 
• In gym we learned how to play racquet golf! Like in golf, we had "holes" (we used hoola-hoops in the gym) to target our balls into. Each group member had their own ball - which were different colors so they were easier to remember where they landed. We used racquets rather than golf clubs. Once we got a ball into one hole, the group moved onto the next hole. It was super fun.

• In word work the grade 1s and 2s worked together on spelling the "A-List" words - the grade 2s would select a word and the grade 1 buddies would try to write it on their mini-whiteboards. The grade 1s also learned how to write the letters L and K:

• During math, we continued on with our construction of 3D objects using nets and decorating them with patterns. We learned how to identify the faces, edges, and vertices. When we are done making the shapes, we will have to identify the number of faces, edges and vertices for each shape that we made. 

• It was also our last day of swimming!

A Day of Remembrance

Highlights:

• In honor of Remembrance Day we created a wreath full of our hands and poppies.

First we traced our hands onto green paper, then traced circle shaped onto red paper:

We cut out four circle shapes to make up the poppy petals:

Next, we glued the red circles onto the green hand:

When we connected all of our hands and poppies together it made a wreath!

•  Before the remembrance day assembly, we had our shape centers...

•  We also met with our big buddies and made Big Buddy Bookmarks!

Reminders:

• No school on Monday, Nov 11. Please remember to bring library books back for Tuesday :)
• We are still accepting food bank donations next week (until Wednesday).
• Wednesday, Nov 13th is our last day of swimming.
• Thursday, Nov 14th is Fun Lunch and an author is visiting the school.

Week 10

Highlights:

•  In Math we learned about 3D shapes. We added new math centers to our morning time, where we get to explore 3D shapes. 

• We also went on a shape hunt outside on the playground and nature grounds. 

Here are some of the things we found:

• In science/art we were introduced to tertiary colors! We mixed the secondary color with the primary color to get the tertiary color. Here is an example of the new color wheel we made:

• For Word work, the grade 2s started work on the "No Excuse B List" words. Some people were able to move on to combining at least 3 of these sight words together to make a complete sentence. The grade 1s learned how to write the letter "e, E":

• This week our wellness goal was to see how many minutes of physical movement breaks we could do throughout the day. So far we have accumulated 20 minutes. We learned that physical activity helps with brain "growth" and learning. Also, it will help us build up our strength. We start with a high intensity movement, then focused strength, then a calming down activity to help us get ready to return to learning.

• Friday, Nov 8: Remembrance Day Assembly is Friday, Nov 8 the starting at 10:45 am.  All parents and guardians are welcome to attend.
• if you have a uniform (ex. from scouts) please wear it for the assembly
• Grades 5 & 6 are still collecting donations of non-perishable food until Nov 8, 2019.  All food items collected will be provided to a local food bank.
• Today is the last day to order photos (this can be done online); photo retakes are tomorrow.

Today was a fun day of costumes and learning!

Room 2 had so many different costumes - from princesses and superheroes to scary witches, skeletons and mad scientists! There were also lots of other movie and game characters, insects, policemen and more!

The teachers planned on being dominos ... but Mr. P came dressed as "Domino's" (pizza).. oops! hehe

Upcoming Event:

Gordon McRae, a children’s book author,  will be visiting the school on Thursday, Nov 14. He has written picture books, novels and fairy tales.   We will begin with Rooms 1-2 at 9am.  He will be taking book orders.  Parents are welcome to come.
