Week 14

Highlights:

• For Social Studies we started the sharing of our family traditions. Some of the traditions included...

having a Christmas party every year on Christmas eve
 baking treats and cookings every Christmas going on family trips every year
 wishing good luck to our ancestors and relatives by putting up decorations
 going canoeing every year
 
creating an ice rink in the back yard every winter to play hockey

• For Word Work the grade 2s learned about vowel sounds and focused on the "a" sounds (long vs short) then went into their books to find words to add to the vowel chart: 1s have been practicing the A-List sight words
• In Art we took our work with tints and shades, and cut them into shapes. From those shapes we constructed pictures - some were realistic others were abstract.

Reminders:

• This Fresh Air Friday we are planning to extend our science learning of building 3D shapes to create  3D shape snow villages. Please dress appropriately for the weather. 
• Beginning Dec 9th (Monday) we will be accepting items for fill-in-the-sock - more detail to follow. 
• Dec. 12 (Thursday) is Festive Evening from 6:00pm to 7:45pm

A great end to November !

Highlights:

•  We put together our 3D shapes and made them into cites. 

• Then, we pinned them to the wall to create a very large city. Some people are still working on it though. 

• We also played the shape review game! We each took a white board and had to draw the shape that Mrs. Yoon called out, or write the number or edges, vertices, or faces the shape had.
• For word work we learned about the "-at Family" words

From this we learned that "a" has 2 sounds: a long and short vowel sound. When it is beside another vowel (such as "e") the long vowel sound of the first vowel is what we say.  So for the word "eat" we say the long "e" sound and do not say the "a" sound in that word. A fun way to remember that is to sing "When 2 vowels go walking, the first one does the talking"

• We met with our big buddies and finally got to share all of the work we have been doing in our visual journals (such as the flower facts, color wheel, and ROYGBIV)

  

 Afterwards our big buddies showed us their book project, where they take a book and modify it into their own stories. We helped them by sharing some of our ideas on what would be interesting in their stories!

• In music we started preparing for the Festive Evening - the song will remain a secret until the event!

• Please remember to bring library books back for Monday :)
• Starting next week, Dec. 2 - we will be starting to share the artifacts from home that represent our family traditions - please remember to bring this in :) 
• Please also return the form with questions about family traditions to help guide the presentations in December. 
• Each class we hope to have about 5 students share about their family tradition.

Week 13

Highlights:

•  This week the school's spirit team arrange for us to have PJ and stuffy day! It was so fun to bring in our favorite stuffies!

• For our color unit we learned about shades and tints. We chose a color and mixed in bits of black to create darker and darker shades of that color.

• Then, the next day we used that same color and mixed in bits of white to create lighter and lighter tints of that color!

• For social studies, we started a new unit on Traditions. After reading the book "This Next New Year" by Janet Wong and learning about some of traditions that Mrs. Yoon shares with the character in the book, we got into groups to share some of our own traditions from home. 

We created a definition of tradition based on our understanding of it and realized that at school we have some special traditions too!

• A letter has been sent home with each student asking for some information about family traditions and treasures. Please read it over and help your child fill out the form and return it to class.
• In gym we started playing floor hockey games and are working on team work and passing before scoring. We have some safety rules that we must remember: (1) Sticks stay below the knees (no slap-shots); (2) Sticks are tools not toys (or weapons); (3) Eyes on the puck and around us; (4) No laying on the ground during floor hockey; (5) have fun (no fighting)

• Tomorrow morning (Thursday) Mrs. Yoon will be absent so our guest teacher is Mrs. Johnson :)
• Soft Entry has started early! As of today, the doors to the school open at 8:30 and supervision will be provided inside until 8:40. Students will be able to choose: (1) Classroom for quiet reading or sketching; (2) Gym for active start: Station dots for movement; (3) Learning Commons for mindful brain exercises (Rubik's cubes, puzzles, mazes, etc.)

• For Fresh Air Friday please remember to dress for the weather!
• Please remember to fill out the questions about your family's traditions and return it to school by next week.

Week 12

Highlights:

• This week was very exciting! First, we learned that we will be starting a "Soft Entry" for the school in December. To get ready for it, we have started practicing soft entry this week! Please read below in the "Reminders" section for details.
• We also had our first lock down drill of the year! Ask us what we have to do during a lock down.
• Then, we got to practice the CBC Music Challenge on Tuesday at the dress rehearsal! 




• In math we have been busy working away on our 3D shapes and pattern designs.
• In Word Work, the grade 2s had a spelling quiz on the "A-List" words that they have been working on over the past weeks, while the grade 1s had printing and book time.
• In science we had a color assessment which tested our understanding of the primary colors and secondary colors. Asks us what these are and which colors are created when you mix:
• red + blue
• blue + yellow
• yellow + red
• Then we had our CBC Music Challenge recording!! It was awesome!!

Reminders:

• Parent Teacher Conferences start tomorrow (Thursday, November 21, 2019) from 4 pm to 8 pm, and again on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 8 am to 12 pm. 
• November 26th is the Stuffy & PJ Day!
• We will be practicing Soft Entry for the next two weeks from 8:40-8:50.  Soft Entry will officially begin on Dec 2, 2019.  Here are the guidelines:

1. Entry doors will be unlocked for students at 8:30. They will remain unlocked until 8:40. Parents should not be coming in the student doors. If they need to come into the school, they should be asked to go to the front door to enter and check in at the office.
2. Students will enter the school, hang up coats, change into indoor shoes.
3. Chose soft entry location/activity:
   

   · Classroom for quiet reading or sketching

   · Gym for active start: Station dots for movement

   · Learning Commons for mindful brain exercises (Rubik's cubes, puzzles, mazes, etc.)

4.  As we start this new plan, at 8:39 an announcement will be made for all students to head to their classrooms. Eventually we would hope that students and staff would be aware of the time and start cleaning up and head back to class.
5. 8:40 bell will ring, and students should be ready for learning back in their classrooms. The doors will be locked at this time. Students who are late would be coming in the main door and getting a late slip.
