Ice Cream Party and Year End Assembly

This morning we worked on our Calgary buildings. Some of our friends from grade 5-6 came over to give us a hand. Our buildings are all really sturdy thanks to our excellent framing and we are working hard to add the details that make our buildings look unique.

After recess we had our year end assembly. We recognized some more people for caring for themselves, others, and our place and watched a performance by the grade 5-6 guitar club.  We also said goodbye to Mrs. Russell who will be going to a new school next year.

After lunch we worked on our story writing and then it was time for our ice cream party with Mrs. Kidd! We had ice cream, strawberries, whipped cream, and sprinkles! At the party we also celebrated our class birthdays that will happen over the summer.

Then we went outside for some free gym time while we waited for the Teachers vs. Grade 6 basketball game. The teachers and the grade 6 students all played really well and in the end the grade 6's were the winners.

Tomorrow we will be cleaning out our desks and bringing home our school work. Please bring a bag (a reusable grocery bag works well) for all of your things.

Last Day of Swimming

* Reminder: Tomorrow is Sports Day! We will plan to be outside regardless of the weather (unless it is really pouring), so please come dressed for a full morning of sporty outdoor fun! Please remember to bring a water bottle that is labelled with your name. *

Today we worked on our stories a lot to try to get a close to finished as possible. Some of us were able to completely finish our stories and we have brought them home today! Those of us who haven't finished will have one last chance next week to get everything wrapped up.

After recess we had our last day in our math groups. Ask me what I have improved at in adding and subtracting.

This afternoon we had a little bit more story writing time and then we went to our last day of swimming. We didn't get our swimming report cards, they will be sent up to the school next week.

Our helpers on Monday are: Shawn and Katie

FYI: We will be celebrating our summer birthdays on Monday at our Ice Cream Party with Mrs. Kidd. No need to send in any treats, Mrs. Kidd is providing ice cream with lots of toppings!

Transition day!

This morning was our day to try out our new grade for next year. The grade 1's stayed in Room 2 and practiced being the grade 2 leaders they will become in September. They helped the students from kindergarten with a butterfly painting activity, showed them our free choice games, and took them out for recess. The grade 2's went to the grade 3-4 classrooms to see what it will be like to be in grade 3. They did some journal writing and shared their favourite memories of the school year with Ms. Cowdy and Ms. Jones.

* Today's preview of grade 3 does not indicate which class students will be in next year. Students were just sent as a large group to see what grade 3 will be like. Students will find out their class placements in August, just like they did this year*

After our switch we went to our math groups. We are wrapping up our last few lessons on adding and subtracting.

This afternoon we worked on our story writing for a little bit and then we went to swimming.

Stories, building, and swimming

This morning we started with solo booktime. We made a goal to be able to read for 20 minutes without stopping. We have been working our way up to this goal and today was our first day trying for the whole 20 minutes. Ms. Boyer had to give a few of us reminders to keep reading, but overall it went really well. We will try again tomorrow. In the summer it is a great idea to try to read for at least a few minutes every day to keep up (or even improve) our reading skills for next year.

After reading we worked on our stories. Most of us are working on finishing up our events, big finale, and the wrap up. A few of us have finished writing and have chosen to type our stories. Our goal is to have our stories finished this week so we can bring them home to share with you.

In math we worked in our groups. By now all of our grade 1's can add and subtract numbers up to 18 using different strategies and some can add 2-digit numbers. If your child is in grade 2, they are now able to add and subtract 2-digit numbers without regrouping.  Please ask your child to demonstrate their growing math skills for you!

This afternoon we had a little bit of time to work on our Calgary buildings and then it was time for swimming.

Our helpers tomorrow are: Jasper and Joachim

Sports Day is on Friday. If you would like to volunteer, please email Ms. Boyer

A Special Project and Weeding

This morning we spent most of our day working on a special surprise project for our Dads. These projects are in our backpacks.

After we were finished our projects we went to the Whispering Woods and did some weeding. We focused on pulling up dandelions and goats beard. The dandelions are really tough to pull out from the roots but at least we were able to get rid of the flowers so they can't go to seed and spread to make more dandelions.

On Monday at 3:00 we will be having a short ceremony at the playground to dedicate the new playground bench to former Dr. Coffin teacher Ms. Camille Kestner. Ms. Kestner passed away from cancer in 2014 while working at our school and a small plaque will be installed next to our new playground bench as a way to remember her. Any parents who would like to attend the ceremony are welcome to join us.

More swimming!

This morning we continued with our story writing. Today we started adding in our events. Our goal is to make events that build the excitement for our reader as the story goes along. Ask me about the first event that happens in my story.

After recess we had a little bit of time to go on www.abcya.com.  We could choose to play word games or math games. The grade 1's had to try the games in the grade 2 section (since they are almost grade 2's), and the grade 2's had to try game sin the grade 3 section (since they are almost grade 3's).

Then it was time for math. We are working on subtraction in our math groups.

After lunch we read Rosie Revere Engineer and then Ms. Boyer showed us the next step of our building project. We didn't have time to get going on it today but we will be all ready to continue building on Monday.

Then it was time for swimming. It was a little bit chilly walking to the pool but we were great swimmers again today!

Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday. We will be working on a special indoor project for part of the morning and then we will be weeding and watering in the whispering woods, natureground, and sun circle.

Ice Cream Sundays Here we Come!!!

**Reminder: Swimming tomorrow!**

WE WON!!! WE WON!!! Congratulations to everyone in Room 2 for returning all their library books so quickly. We were the first class to have all of our books returned and we have won an ice cream sunday party!! Our party will take place on June 25 in the afternoon.

Today we continued with our final projects of the year. In the morning we worked on our stories. Today we needed to add our kick-off and the problem. Ask me to tell you how my story goes so far.

After recess we finished our Dr. Coffin timeline and then we went to our math groups.

After lunch we worked on our Calgary buildings.  Today some groups were able to finish their framing and other groups will need one or two more days. After the framing is finished we will start working on the walls, windows, roofs, and all the other details.

Then it was time to plant the outdoor garden. We planted potatoes, carrots, beets, and zucchinis. We took turns planting in groups. When we weren't planting we got to make different choices for free gym time.
