The last week before winter holidays

Highlights:

• This week we had carol singing in the mornings with the entire school. Some of the songs that we sang include: Six White Boomers, The Twelve Days of Christmas, Silent Night, Frosty the Snowman, Holly Jolly Christmas, I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas, Let It Go.

• We also got to create our ornaments! 
• First, we started by putting a layer of glue on the foil balls,

•  Then, we added pieces of colored tissue paper to it. 

• The next day, we added a second layer to make the color really stand out and ensure there were no foil bits showing. 

• Here they all are drying! 

• Afterwards we added decorative elements and then covered it in Mod Podge to make it hard and shiny!

• Also, on Polar Express day we went to the learning commons where we got yummy hot chocolate and listened to Polar Express story which Mrs. Kidd read to us. A big thank-you to the parent volunteers for coming and helping out. 

• In gym we got to have a "soft snowball fight" (with socks stuffed with cotton). We also played "Grinch Ball" which was super fun. Then we had gym centers which included volley ball, ringette, hula hoops and soccer practice.

• Thursday, Dec. 19th is the last day of classes with Mrs. Yoon and before the winter break.

• Monday, January 6th is the first day back to classes after the winter holidays! We are very excited to welcome Mrs. Boyer as our teacher for the remainder of the school year! :)

FAF: Games and Snow Shoeing Adventure

Highlights:

• Today we me with our big buddies and got to play the board games they created for math. They had to build these games to learn about probability. It was really neat! 

•  We also got to go outside and use snow shoes! Our big buddies helped us to put the show shoes on and took us around in the snow.

• For math we created 3D Shape Skeleton Cities. Using our knowledge of edges and vertices of 3D shapes, we created shape cities using marshmallows and toothpicks!

• In word work we learned about the ed-family words and practiced more poetry reading and copying.

Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony 
New Years tradition from Japan
"At New Years we prepare special food called 'Osechi Ryori' and put it in this special stackable box. It is eaten together with family on New Years Day. Each food in the box has special meaning such as wisdom, long life, wealth, etc."

Chinese New Year
"The character on the shirt is an upside-down word of 'blessing' in Chinese. The upside-down means 'come' or 'arrive'. In direct translation it means 'blessing arrive'. the red color has a symbolic meaning of joy and celebration.


Christmas tradition - Santa ornaments
"Our family collects Santa figurines. My grandpa Mike has hundreds of Santas that they line up on the picture rails in their house in Victoria."

Chinese New Year - red pocket
"The red pocket is for good luck in the new year."

• Please remember to bring library books back for Monday :)
• Next Monday, Dec 16th is "Polar Express Day" - we are allowed to wear PJ's to school with slippers or winter holiday clothes.  We will have hot chocolate and get to ride the polar express to the library for the story with the whole school!
• We are still accepting items for fill-a-sock until Monday.
• Carol singing begins next week on Tuesday. This will happen in the morning right after the attendance has been taken.  Families are welcome to join us in the learning commons for this.

Week 15

Highlights:

•  This week Mrs. Boyer came in to visit our classroom in the morning because she will be our teacher after the winter holidays! 
• We got to watch a few more presentations on family traditions:

Ramadan - involves fasting and then a celebration with food at the end

to represent the traditions of decorating the Christmas tree and the love of birds and owls

to represent the last day of treatment and his birthday


• We finished up our shape cities! Here are a few more examples:

• We also did a super cool science experiment and learned about the scientific process. The question we investigated was: "What is black made of?"
• We predicted that all of the colors of the rainbow, mixed together, make black.
• Then, we took a black marker and used it to put a dot on a coffee filter paper. 

• Afterwards, we used droppers to add water on top of the black dot.

• The water made the black dot separate into other colors! 
• Ask us what colors we discovered!

Reminders:

• Tomorrow Mrs. Remmer will be our guest teacher because Mrs. Yoon will be away for the day. 
• We are still accepting items for Fill a Sock  Campaign- until Friday Dec. 13 
• Items that we are looking for include: Socks (this will be what we use to stuff everything into), Gloves, mitts and hats, Lip balm, Travel size toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Hand Warmers, Calgary Transit tickets, Cough drops, Travel mugs, Deodorant, Brushes and combs, Chocolates and Candies, Razors and shaving cream, Travel size Shampoo and conditioner.
• Dec. 12 (Thursday) is Festive Evening from 6:00pm to 7:45pm
• Dec 16th Spirit Club is organizing a Polar Express day - detail to come.
• Last day of school before winter holidays is Dec 19th
• School resumes on Jan 6th
