Today we continued working on our Buckbrush study. To start our work today we began by looking at our last botany page about Goldenrod. Each of us needed to decide how we were going to push ourselves to make our work even better on our Buckbrush page. Some of us decided we were going to work on using bigger spaces between our words to make our facts easier to read. Some of us decided we would push ourselves to do one or two more facts than we did last time. Some of us decided we would try to do an extra fact that we research on our own. Ask me how I am planning to push myself.
After recess we worked on our 3D shapes project. We will have one more day to finish our projects. While we were working, Ms. Boyer continued interviewing us to see what we can tell her about 3D shapes.
This afternoon Ms. Boyer was at a meeting so Mrs. Wilkens worked with us. We worked on our leaf study and then had gym. Our goal with our leaf study today was to finish our rubbing, sketch, and labels for at least 2 leaves.

Treat Day!
This morning we worked on our buck brush page. First, we needed to make our title. Then we started writing our facts. Did you know that the wood can be used to make tools? Did you know the branches have lines on them? Did you know that buck brush has small white berries?
Then it was time for recess. Thanks to our Room 1 friends for providing the treats for treat day! After recess and printing we worked on our 3D shapes project. To start we did a mini-museum. We put our work on our desks and then did a tour of the portable and room 1 to see if we could get any new ideas from their work. We noticed that some people were bringing extra shapes from home to add to their projects. We noticed that some people added extra details to the base of their projects. That made them look more interesting.
After lunch we did our leaf study. On Friday we made the leaf rubbings for this project. Today we started working on leaf sketches and labels. We are working on adding lots of details to our sketches by looking closely at the leaves and we are trying to add labels that describe the leaf shapes, sizes, colours, and edges.

Treat Day Tomorrow!
Our blog group this week is: Addison, Senna, Liam, and Leander
This morning we worked on journals. First, we worked on our pictures. Next, we read Ms. Boyer's journal entry. She made some spelling mistakes and forgot some capital letters. She kept forgetting to make the word "I" a capital! We had to fix the mistakes for her. Then, we stared our own journal writing. The grade 1's needed to write at least 3 sentences and the grade 2's needed to write at least 1 paragraph.
After recess the grade 1's finished their printing work for the letter U and the grade 2's did word work. Right now, the grade 2's are working on being able to spelling the days of the week and months of the year correctly and are making sure they are confident about their order. Then we worked on our 3D shapes project. We continued building our shapes. We have two more days to finish our project! Then we are going to share them with our big buddies!
This afternoon we finished our buckbrush paintings. We had a few minutes to finish our leaves and backgrounds and then Ms. Boyer showed us a special technique for making the berries. To make the berries we used white liquid paint and made dots using the end of the paint brush handle.

Leaf Study and Plant Mapping
Today was Fresh Air Friday. We started with a bit of center time and then we did two different activities.
First, we worked on our leaf study. We made leaf rubbings using crayons and the leaves we collected from the Whispering Woods. We had to fold our art journal page into 4 sections and then we placed the leaves under the page. We also added a title to our page. Our title was Leaf Study. We used different crayon colours to do our leaf rubbings and we did 4 different leaf rubbings. When we did the rubbings we noticed that the veins in the leaves made designs and that every leaf had a different vein pattern. Our leaves were many different sizes and shapes. Some were pointy and some were smooth. Some of them also had dots. We noticed that some of our leaves have become brown and crumbly on the edges but still seem alive in the middle.
Second, we mapped the whispering woods and recorded where we saw the different plants we have studied. This is an important skill for a botanist because it is important to know where you have found different plants so that you could find them again. A botanist might want to take a sample of a plant back to their lab to study and would need to know where they had found the plant so they could return to it another time. A botanist might also want to map the plants in an area so that they could see if anything changes over time. We used different symbols to show the rosehips, buckbrush, willows and aspen trees. When we were looking closely to make our maps we noticed buckbrush and rosehips in places we hadn't noticed before.

Recipe Books Complete!
This morning we started with our centers. A few of us are still working to finish our math center work from last week and we are using our morning center time to do this. Ask me if I am still working on my math centers.
After centers we worked on our recipe books. Our goal was to get all the pieces of our book finished. First we had to finish the front cover. Then we had to finish all our artwork and recipes. Finally we had to put all the pages in the right order and put them in our blue folder.
After recess we did printing and wordwork.
Then we worked on our recipe books again. We are bringing them home today! This recipe book includes recipes that we made at school using the vegetables from our garden and from some lovely donations. Please notice our artwork for each recipe. This was our first project using pastels. Please notice our borders and decorations on the recipes. Please try these recipes at home, we really enjoyed them!
Then it was time for Fun Lunch! Thank you to all the parents who volunteered for this event.
After lunch we read a story called "The Greedy Triangle". It was about a triangle that kept wanting more sides and angles. Each time he got a new side and a new angle he turned into a new shape. At the end he got really frustrated and decided to go back to being a triangle.
Then we worked on our 3D shapes projects. We started making a target today so we will know when our projects are finished. So far we have decided that we need to include 4 different kinds of shapes to get to the center of the target.
After shapes we had gym and music.
We are bringing home two notices today. One is for a fundraiser from the school council and the other is from the Lunch Lady.

Beet Day!
This morning was a little hectic because of picture day. We worked on our centers and then had to get ready for our pictures. We didn't end up getting to have library because everything was just too busy.
After our pictures we worked on our 3D shapes project. Then it was time for recess.
After recess it was time to do some cooking with beets. We didn't have quite enough beets in our garden but Cedar and his family kindly donated some beets from their garden. Thanks Cedar! We made Unbeetable Hummus. It is pink thanks to the roasted beets that go in it. Then we worked on decorating our recipes and doing our beet artwork.
After lunch we worked on our front covers for our recipe books. We are almost ready to assemble our books! Then we went to gym. We are working on our skipping skills this week.
After gym we had some finish up time and free choice. Then it was snack time! We tried our Unbeetable hummus with pita chips, rice crackers, and carrots. Some of us thought the hummus tasted strange at first because we were thinking about regular hummus. Once we starting thinking 'beets" it tasted a lot better!

A Monday-ish Tuesday
Our blog group this week is: Aksel, Reid, Lily, Katie, and Shawn
This morning we started with journals. Ms. Boyer showed us how to write different types of sentences to make our writing more detailed. We learned to start our writing with a sentence that tells the topic and then to add some sentences that give details about the topic. Then we learned to write a finish sentence to help wrap up the topic at the end. The grade 2 friends worked to do all these types of sentences in their journal to make a whole paragraph. The grade 1's worked to make sure they had a topic sentence and at least 2 detail sentences.
In math we finally got a chance to work on our 3D shapes project. Lots of us were very excited to work on our creations! For lots of us, folding the shapes nets is the hardest part.
This afternoon we did our buckbrush painting for our botany project. We tried to paint everything except the berries. Ms. Boyer is going to show us a special technique for painting the berries tomorrow.
In music we watched some videos of a band using school instruments and tools to play some famous songs. Then we worked on our Basia Bulat project. Today we got to tell Mr. O'Reilly which instrument we would like to learn to play.
