This morning Ms. Boyer was away for an appointment and Mrs. Bigelow was here instead. We started the day by meeting with Room 1 and the Portable to learn about some new centers. These centers will happen at the beginning of the day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. To start, our three centers are: poetry, bookmarks, and literacy games.
After that we did the first part of our names project. We will be creating fancy name plates to go with our awesome portraits. Then we will start using our name homework to write about our names.
In math we started a new survey about fun lunches. We are trying to find out which type of fun lunch is the most popular. Once we have this information we will share it with the fun lunch organizers. ** Please note that the deadline for ordering for the first fun lunch is Thursday Oct. 11 (not Friday as noted in the handout).
This afternoon we started working on our arthropod diagrams. Today we focused on identifying the main body parts of our insect and making sure that our drawings included them all. Next time we will start adding the labels and title.
Tomorrow morning we will be welcoming a guest author to our school!

This morning we pretended it was Monday and started with journals. During journals we had an interruption. It was a lockdown drill. In a lockdown drill we practice going to our safe spot in the classroom and we practice being completely silent so that it seems like our classroom is empty. At the end of the lockdown drill our school resource officer came to talk to us. He said we did a great job!
After recess we had booktime and printing. Then we worked on graphing. Some of us used the time to finish up our vehicle graphs. The rest of us had a chance to try making a graph on the computer. We used our vehicle survey information and tried to see if we could make a computer version of the graph using this website Create A Graph. Ms. Boyer said not to worry if we weren't able to get one done today because this was just our first chance to practice.
This afternoon we had some finish up time and then played our 4 corner soccer game in gym. After that we got ready for our arthropod research project by looking at examples of diagrams and deciding what makes a good diagram. Here are the requirements we came up with and that we will be using when we start our own diagrams tomorrow:

After that we had music. Today we started presenting our musical research projects to the class!

Terry Fox Run + It's a Girl!
Today was a very exciting day in Room 2. We started our morning with a story and then went to read with our big buddies. After that we got ready for the Terry Fox Run by having a conversation about Terry Fox and the reason that we run. Then we got our stickers ready for the run.
Before recess Bella from Grade 6 came to visit us with a very special surprise. Bella knew that Ms. Boyer had not told the class if the baby is going to be a boy or a girl so Bella made a special cake to reveal the surprise! The cake had plain white icing but when we cut open the cake it was pink inside! Surprise! It's a girl! After the big surprise we all got to eat a piece of the cake. It was delicious. Thank you Bella!

At 10:30 we all went to the gym for a special Terry Fox Assembly. The grade 5-6 students told us a bit about Terry's story and then lead some warm up exercises. Then it was time for the run. Our class did an amazing job and ran a total of 138 laps!

Have a great long weekend and Happy Thanksgiving!
FYI we are bringing home an orange fun lunch form today.

Getting ready for Thanksgiving
This morning we had a chance to finish our recipe books and those of us where were finished got to try making a special thanksgiving decoration to bring home. We are excited to be bringing these projects home today to share as special Thanksgiving gifts for our families!
In math today we worked to finish up our vehicle graphs. Those people who were finished had a chance to play race to 100.
This afternoon we had computer time. Today we tested out some new games on www.mathplayground.com. After that we had gym. We played a new soccer game that is a 4 corners, never ending version of soccer. In this game we really had to use the controlled dribbling skills we had been practicing this week.
After that we went to library and then we had music.
Tomorrow is our Terry Fox Run! The weather isn't exactly typical for this run but we are going to try to make the best of the situation. We will likely be running shorter laps within the school field rather than running down the hill. Please make sure you are dressed for the weather and for running. An extra pair of socks and a good snack might not be a bad idea!
Before the run tomorrow each student will be given a special sticker to place on their clothes that allows them to keep track of their laps and also has a place to write the name of a special person they would like to run for. If your child has a special person that has been affected by cancer they may wish to write that person's name on their sticker. To do this, it would be helpful if they could write down the person's name on a piece of paper at home so that they can copy it onto their sticker tomorrow.

New Table Groups!
This morning we worked to put together our recipe books. There were 6 different steps that we had to complete to have this job done. The biggest job was making sure our poems were finished. Quite a few of us had to keep working on this part of the job today during our morning working time and some of us continued doing this job in our finish up time this afternoon. We will have a bit more time tomorrow to get this whole job done and our books completed.
After recess we worked on our vehicle graphs. These graphs are more challenging because we needed to make each square count as 5 cars instead of 1. This meant that showing smaller numbers like 3, or numbers inbetween groups of 5, like 73 a bit tricky. We spent some time practicing this at the carpet before we went to work on our own graphs.
This afternoon we had some finish up time. Our finish up job was our poems. If we were finished our poems we were able to choose a quiet free choice. After that we had gym. We are practicing soccer skills. Then we worked on the next step of our science research. We are going to be creating a diagram of the insect or other arthropod we have decided to research so today we went on to the computers to find a good picture that we can use to help us with our diagram. We printed out the pictures.
After that we moved our desks to our new table groups for October! Ask me who I am sitting with this month!
We are bringing home 2 notices today. The first one is about picture day. The second one is a fundraising form for the Terry Fox Run. We are also able to accept donations at the following link:

S.T.O.P.
Today we had a visit from our school's occupational therapist, Ms. Carpentier. Today she told us about a really great strategy to help us do our best work. This strategy is called S.T.O.P. These 4 letters can help us to be prepared for our working time so that we are able to do our best. Here is a visual reminder of the letters. Please ask me to explain what the letters mean and how they can help me be prepared to do my best.
After recess we worked on our poetry. Many of us were able to get our first drafts finished and moved on to decorating (grade 1) or writing out our good copies (grade 2). In order to improve our work today we talked about, and tried a few different strategies. The first strategy was sharing our work with a partner and asking for feedback. The second strategy was using the list of ideas we created as a class to help us come up with our next idea. Sometimes it helped to read this list with a friend who could help us figure out tricky words.
This afternoon we started talking about our next science project. We are going to be doing research about insects and other bugs. We are each going to choose one type of insect or bug to research so that we can become an expert. Today we had a chance to look up some options on the computers. Many of us were ready to choose at the end of the day today and told Ms. Boyer our choice. A few of us weren't quite ready to pick and will try to look up some more ideas at home and then tell Ms. Boyer our choice tomorrow. So far praying mantis and spiders are very popular choices in room 2! Ask me about my choice.

Monday routines and poetry
This morning we started with our weekly journal time. We are getting better at staying focused and using the timer to make sure we are finishing our pictures on-time. We are also getting better at using the sentence starters and our checklist to improve our writing.
After recess we had printing and booktime and then we started working on a graph to show the results of the car survey we did on Friday. In this graph we are learning how to use counting by 5's to represent larger numbers in a bar graph. To do this we are making each square on the graph mean 5 cars, rather than just 1 car. Today we only had time to get our graphs set up. Tomorrow we will start adding the bars to show our data.
This afternoon we had some finish up time, practiced our soccer skills in gym, and then we worked on our "Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall" poems. The grade 2's were working on creating a good copy if they had the rough copy finished. In the good copy we made sure all the spelling was correct and that all the words were neatly traced with marker.
We are collecting "Toonies for Terry" all this week. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the run on Friday If you are available to help, please contact Ms. Boyer or Mrs. Polski.
