First Days of the New School Year

Welcome to Room 2's blogs (grade 1 and 2)!
We will be posting blogs on Wednesdays and Fridays with highlights and reminders for students and families to read.

Highlights:
  •  Math - we were introduced to graphs and then created a class picture graph using everyone's birthdays! We learned that most students in room 2 were born in November, January, and April.
  • Art - We learned about self portraits and then created artwork that is inspired by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein - who uses Ben Day Dots. We started with an outline of our faces. Next we will be working on adding colored dots.
  • We really enjoyed meeting each other and getting to know who is in our classroom as well as the other grade 1 and 2s in room 1.

Reminders:
  • This year we are going to recognize student birthdays in a new way. In the past some families would send a treat with their child on their birthday to be shared with their classmates. We are requesting that treats are no longer sent for children’s birthdays. We would like to recognize students through a weekly announcement and small birthday “gift”.
  • Our annual welcome back potluck BBQ is on Thursday, sept 12 from 5 to 7pm (oldest siblings of Dr. Coffin will get a form that are to be returned by Monday, Sept 9)
  • This Friday is our first Fresh Air Friday, where we will be learning outdoors. Please arrive to school on Friday dressed for the weather and prepared to learn outside.

Boat Building!

Highlights:
  • Today we shared our boat designs with Mrs Yoon and got them approved for building!

  • We got our boat supplies and started building them to match our design:

  • Once the boats were built, we went to our water bins to test it for stability and movement.

  • We also used pennies to see how much cargo it could hold. Our target was to hold 100 pennies!

  • Some of us realized we needed to make alterations to our designs to make it more stable for harsh weather conditions (we had our friends blow air to mimic strong winds

  • Then in math, we had more fun with measurement activities using non-standard measurement. In groups of 3-4, we went off on various measurement missions:
    1. We had to use our feet to measure the distance between room 1's door to the office door
    2. We used math cubes to measure how tall we were... some of use laid on the ground, others connected the cubes vertically and stood up beside it.
    3. We used the one's blacks from the place-value-block set to measure the width of our desks
    4. We used the length of our bodies to measure the distance between the steps in the learning commons
    5. We used our hands to measure the width of our carpet
Reminders:
  1. We will not be going to Nose Hill tomorrow because of the weather. Instead we are planning to stay closer to the school - dependent on when the rain falls. Saakokoto will be coming to share stories of the land - parents and guardians are welcome to come during the grade 1-2 time (11:40am-12:!5pm)
  2. Special helper for tomorrow is Aadhya
  3. Next Monday is Sports Day!
  4. Year End Assembly & Grade 6 Farewell is next Tuesday
  5. Next Wednesday is the last day of school :)
