Boats!

This morning we did story writing and then we read another story about the prairies. It was about the Dust Bowl. Ask me to explain what happened during the "Dirty Thirties" on the prairies and why it was so hard for the farmers.

After recess we had word work. The grade 1's played a game to help us review our no excuses words. The grade 2's continued their study of contractions. Then we did math. The grade 1's worked on some word problems and tried to decide if the problems were adding or subtracting problems. The grade 2's worked on trying to use our new adding strategy to solve problems in the hundreds and thousands!

This afternoon we did some more boat builder training. We focused on learning strategies for making our boats move without needing to be pushed by us. The three strategies we learned were:
1. Using a balloon to make an air powered boat. You attach a straw to the balloon and then when  you put the boat in the water the air comes out of the straw and makes the boat move.
2. Using an elastic band and a piece of plastic to make a motor that spins and makes the boat move.
3. Using a skewer and card paper to make a sail. Then using our own wind to make the boat move.

One of the challenges with all of these boats was making the boats travel in a straight line. That is a challenge we will have to try to solve when we make our own boats next week. Please start collecting boat building supplies at home so that you will have everything you will need to make your boat next week.
