Today was Fresh Air Friday and it was also Potato Day!
To start the day we had big buddies. Our big buddies are doing a special project where they are trying to take old discarded books and make them better. They read us the stories and then asked us which parts we didn't like and how we thought they could make it better. A few of our groups had extra time and got to look at another art project our buddies are working on. We are excited to see their final projects!
Then we started our potato stations. Before we went to our stations Ms. Boyer showed us how to make potato wedges. Our first station was potato prints. We will use our prints as the covers for our recipe books. Next, we went with Mr. O'Reilly to work on the potato wedges recipe. Last, we went to see Mrs. Hamby to work on our pastel potato artwork.
After the potato stations we got to eat the potato wedges! They tasted super duper good with ketchup. They tasted like french fries!
Then we started our leaf study. Our outdoor job was to find as many different kinds of leaves as we could. It is important for botanists to be able to tell the difference between leaves because often that is how they tell the difference between different plants. We were able to find quite a few different types. Some were very prickly! Next week we will use these leaves for a special leaf study project.

Zucchini Day!
This morning we started with quiet centers and then we went to the learning commons. Our new student teacher Ms. Reil read us a new story. The story was about a person who wanted to great. He thought that to be great he should try to have everyone look up to him. He made a huge tower so that everyone would look up to him, but it didn't work. Then he learned from an old lady that they way to be great is to be helpful to other people. At the end of the story he used the wood from his tower to help his village build a school. Then he was really great.
Then it was time for our Zucchini stations. We made Zucchini Bread! First, we did our zucchini artwork with Mrs. Hamby. Then we went to work on our recipes with Mrs. Armour. Last we went to the staffroom and made the bread with Ms. Boyer.
This afternoon we finished our artwork and recipes. Then it was time for gym and music. At the end of the day we got to eat the bread!

Carrot Cookies!
To start this morning we did our new quiet centers. Lots of us were really excited about making comic books and yarn sticks. A few of us also went to the math center and worked on hidden pictures. Ask me which center I chose today. After centers we had library. We are bringing home new books today.
After centers we worked on our 3D net creations. We shapes like triangular prisms, hexagonal pyramids, cylinders, cubes, square pyramids, and pentagonal prisms to make different things like cities, football fields, castles, farms, and trains.
After recess we did three baking stations! At the first station we helped Ms. Boyer grate the carrots and the orange zest for the cookies. Ms. Boyer called us the "Grate Team" because we were really good at our job. Next we went to visit Mrs. Armour in the portable. She helped us work on our carrot cookie recipes. We read the recipe and decorated our own copy. Last we went to see Mrs. Hamby. She showed us how to do an art project with pastels. We each made our own carrot art.
After lunch we had some more time to work on our recipe and our carrot artwork. The we went to gym. In gym we played soccer. After gym we got to have some iPad time and then we did our jobs and then we got to eat the cookies!

Happy Thanksgiving!
This morning we started with journals. Quite a few of us wrote about Thanksgiving. We worked to write at least 3 ideas if we are in grade 1 and at least 6 ideas if we are in grade 2. We also read a story called Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed that was all about doing kind things for others and the ways that our kindness can spread. It was also about a very big high school idea called exponential growth! We learned that if everyone can just be kind to 5 other people kindness could come to every person in the world in only 15 days!
In math we started learning how to create 3D shapes using shapes nets. We are all trying to make different 3D shapes and then we will use our shapes to create a sculpture. One of our friends says he is going to try to make Hogwarts!
In gym we started with three warm up drills. The first one was a dribbling drill where you had to control the ball while you did a zigzag through the cones, the second one was a passing station, and the third one was a shooting drill. Then we played some mini soccer games.
In music we are learning a song called Fool by Basia Bulat. Sometimes we practice by singing along to the video and sometimes Mr. O'Reilly plays in on his guitar while we sing.

Bulbs, Seeds, and Sketches
Today was Fresh Air Friday.
First, we went outside and planted bulbs in the garden beds at the front of the school. The bulbs were northern lights tulip, trumpet daffodils, hollywood nights tulips, sailors delight tulips, and a spring cheer mix. To plant the bulbs we first had to dig a hole 15cm deep. The bulbs will stay dormant in the dirt over the winter and then they will bloom in the spring.
Then we sketched the buckbrush with Mrs. Armour. It is the third plant in our botany study. The buckbrush has little white berries on it that look like little pompoms. These little berries were in clumps. It has a lot of long branches. We noticed lines and lots of leaves on the branches.
Last, we went on a seed hunt with Mrs. Hamby. We walked around the natureground looking for seeds and seed pods. We noticed lots of pocket gopher holes. Some of the seeds were from rosehips, some were from the goldenrod, some were from buckbrush, and some were from wild blue flax. We also found some wild sage.
We had a great day thanks to the volunteers who came to help us. Thank you to Taylor's mom and Leander's grandparents for coming to join us today! Also a big thank you to Ashton's family for donating the bulbs!

Today we started with our quiet choices. Then Ms. Boyer and Mrs. Hamby told us about our new centers for next week. They are:
1. Bookmaking and stories
2. Yarn Sticks
3. Hidden Pictures
4. Literacy Games
5. Finish Up
After recess we did printing and booktime. Then we started our finish up jobs in math.
After lunch Ms. Boyer read us a story called "That's Mine!". She had noticed a few people during centers who were forgetting to share and be generous with our class tools and supplies. This story was about some frogs who had the same problem and had to learn to be more peaceful and cooperative.
In gym we worked on our soccer passing skills with a partner. Then we played Monkey in the Middle. Two people stand across from each other and another person stands in the middle. The people on the outsides try to pass the ball to each other without letting the person in the middle get the ball. If the person in the middle gets the ball, they switch spots with someone from the outside.
In music we started working on a special song for a music contest that we are going to enter. If we win the song might get played on the radio and our school will win a prize!
At the end of the day we got to go visit the portable. We had a special secret surprise for Ms. Boyer. Her wedding party is this weekend (she got married in the summer, but they didn't have the party) and we surprised her with special hearts we had made on Monday when she was away. We each put our own message on the hearts. Ms. Boyer says she will use them for decoration at the wedding party!
Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday. We will be doing three difference activities. One of the activities will be planting bulbs in the front flower beds. If any parents would like to come join us, extra hands always make planting easier! We will plan to start planting at about 9:30.

A very special guest
This morning we started the day by working on our botany project. Today our job was to add our facts to the goldenrod page. Here are some facts we learned about goldenrod:
1. The blossoms make a nice hair rinse.
2. The petals can be used to add colour to bread and pancakes.
3. The seeds can be used to thicken soup.
4. Was used to treat the mumps.
5. Used to make a medicinal tea to increase appetite.
6. Can be used for a herbal bath.
After that we were very excited to welcome our special guest for today. His name is Randy Bottle (Saa-kokoto in Blackfoot) and he is a Blackfoot Elder. He will be coming to our school several times this year to help us learn about the land, Blackfoot history and culture, and about the ways that we are all connected to the land. Today Randy taught us how to say some things in Blackfoot. We all had a chance to introduce ourselves. Did you know that Oki means hello? He also shared with us the way that he was given his name and that many Blackfoot people are given their names based on their personalities. He also showed us his headdress. It was made from eagle feathers, weasel pelts and horse hair.
Due to our visit from Randy we had a later recess today with just our class. After our special recess we read a story and then got our math folders organized. Tomorrow we will be starting our finish up days for our shape centers so we needed to get ourselves organized so that we will know what we need to finish tomorrow.
After lunch we watched "Don't let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" and then we finished the last step of our citizenship flags. This was the last part of our flags project! The whole project will be up on display in the hallway soon and it will then be moved to our classrooms as a display for the whole year. This display will help us to remember ways to be great students, great friends, and great citizens of our land.

We learned that we shouldn't drink sugar drinks or drinks with caffeine before a performance. Instead, we should drink water or warm tea. Then we watched a video about our vocal cords.
