June 25

Highlights:
  • Today we started the morning with a year end assembly and then had our grade 6 Farewell and wished them well for their year in grade 7!
  • Then, we worked away on our Arctic stories and were able to do some sharing of the stories :)
  • We also had our magnetic hunt - and learned that not all objects are attracted to a magnet! Also, some objects have a stronger attraction to magnets that other objects.
Reminders:
  1. Special helpers for Tomorrow are Cedar and Kais
  2. Tomorrow is the last day of school!

  • In the afternoon, we packed up some of our work and are bringing it home.
  • Then, we worked on our Arctic stories!
  • Afterwards, we started the movie, Charlotte's Web, because Mrs. W's guided reading group were doing a novel study and were not able to finish their book. We will continue the movie another day.

June 21

Highlights:
  • Today we worked away on our Arctic Stories. Some people were able to print out their final copies and created the covers to their books:
  • We also had a discussion about our boat building from yesterday, and reflected on what we did, what we learned, what was the most difficult part, and what was the most favorite part about the project.
  • Finally, we ended the morning with Saakokato who shared stories about rain and thunder.

Reminders:
  1. Special helper for Monday is Enxin
  2. Next Monday is Sports Day!
  3. Year End Assembly & Grade 6 Farewell is next Tuesday
  4. Next Wednesday is the last day of school :)

Boat Building!

Highlights:
  • Today we shared our boat designs with Mrs Yoon and got them approved for building!

  • We got our boat supplies and started building them to match our design:

  • Once the boats were built, we went to our water bins to test it for stability and movement.

  • We also used pennies to see how much cargo it could hold. Our target was to hold 100 pennies!

  • Some of us realized we needed to make alterations to our designs to make it more stable for harsh weather conditions (we had our friends blow air to mimic strong winds

  • Then in math, we had more fun with measurement activities using non-standard measurement. In groups of 3-4, we went off on various measurement missions:
    1. We had to use our feet to measure the distance between room 1's door to the office door
    2. We used math cubes to measure how tall we were... some of use laid on the ground, others connected the cubes vertically and stood up beside it.
    3. We used the one's blacks from the place-value-block set to measure the width of our desks
    4. We used the length of our bodies to measure the distance between the steps in the learning commons
    5. We used our hands to measure the width of our carpet
Reminders:
  1. We will not be going to Nose Hill tomorrow because of the weather. Instead we are planning to stay closer to the school - dependent on when the rain falls. Saakokoto will be coming to share stories of the land - parents and guardians are welcome to come during the grade 1-2 time (11:40am-12:!5pm)
  2. Special helper for tomorrow is Aadhya
  3. Next Monday is Sports Day!
  4. Year End Assembly & Grade 6 Farewell is next Tuesday
  5. Next Wednesday is the last day of school :)

Transition Day

Highlights:
  • Today was Transition Day!
    • the grade 2s went to meet the grade 3s, and got to work on charting and graphing activities
    • the grade 1s had the opportunity to welcome the Kindergarten friends and help them learn about measurement with blocks.

Mrs Yoon had to leave for the afternoon, so Mrs. Bigelow came in to help us out.

Reminders:

  1. Special Helper for tomorrow is: Jeffrey
  2. This Friday we are planning to go to Nose Hill Park for Fresh Air Friday! Saakokoto is planning to be with us for this Summer Solstice and share stories of the land.
    • We will need volunteers for the walk to Nose Hill - if you have police clearance and are available to volunteer, please let me know :)
    • We plan to be heading up to Nose Hill at 9am and should return by 11:30am.
  3. Next Monday is Sports Day - again, volunteers are welcome!

June 18

Highlights:
  • In math we moved onto finding the area of our desks with the blocks.
  • But, we ran into another math problem in the process - we ran out of blocks to fill the area, so we had to figure out how to find the area if you do not have enough blocks to fill up the desk..
    • one group came up with the strategy to draw a line around the inside of the blocks, then count the blocks on the outside. Then, move them into the middle to fill up that space and count it again. Afterwards, they added all the blocks used.
    • Another group figured out that you can count the number of blocks for the length, and add that number up as many times as there are blocks in the width. We ended up using a calculator because there were so many numbers to add up.
    • Others thought of the strategy to "join forces" with another group to combine their blocks and count them all together!

June 17 Ready-Set-Boat!

Highlights:
  • In math we reviewed our knowledge about non-standard vs. standard units of measurement and then tried using non-standard measurement. We decided to use square blocks to measure the perimeter (distance around) our desks. First we made an estimate of the desk's perimeter, then placed blocks side-by-side (without any spaces) around the edges of the desks. Then we counted them, and compared to our estimates. It seems that our desks had a perimeter of about 80 blocks.

  • In science, we tested our boats!
    • First we started with paddle-wheels!
  • We took our bases made out of popsicle sticks, tied an elastic band around it, and then wound up a piece of styrofoam plate as the paddle.
  • Then, we placed it into the water and let go!

  • We realized that the direction the paddle wheel turns, the boat moves in the opposite direction!

  • Next, we tested out our sails! We put two holes in the sail and then put the skewer through the holes. We then blew air to mimic the wind. Some groups added "wind" in the opposite direction to see which way the boat would go!
  • We discovered that the sails that were wider in shape and size were the most successful!

Reminders:

  1. Special Helper for tomorrow is: Aksel
  2. Treat Day is Wednesday and will be run by the Environment Team - the money raised will go towards environmental pursuits by the school.
  3. Wednesday is treat day from the Environment Team.  The money will go towards environmental pursuits at the school.
  4. This Friday we are planning to go to Nose Hill Park for Fresh Air Friday! Saakokoto is planning to be with us for this Summer Solstice and share stories of the land.
