June 17 Ready-Set-Boat!

Highlights:
  • In math we reviewed our knowledge about non-standard vs. standard units of measurement and then tried using non-standard measurement. We decided to use square blocks to measure the perimeter (distance around) our desks. First we made an estimate of the desk's perimeter, then placed blocks side-by-side (without any spaces) around the edges of the desks. Then we counted them, and compared to our estimates. It seems that our desks had a perimeter of about 80 blocks.

  • In science, we tested our boats!
    • First we started with paddle-wheels!
  • We took our bases made out of popsicle sticks, tied an elastic band around it, and then wound up a piece of styrofoam plate as the paddle.
  • Then, we placed it into the water and let go!

  • We realized that the direction the paddle wheel turns, the boat moves in the opposite direction!

  • Next, we tested out our sails! We put two holes in the sail and then put the skewer through the holes. We then blew air to mimic the wind. Some groups added "wind" in the opposite direction to see which way the boat would go!
  • We discovered that the sails that were wider in shape and size were the most successful!
