FAF #3 - Terry Fox Run

Highlights:
  •  Today we started with centers and then a discussion about Terry Fox! Then, we met with the entire school in the gym for an assembly:

  • A couple of students from the school, who had cancer, were celebrated at the assembly. Then, the grade 5 and 6s led us through a warm up and some stretches.
  • Afterwards we went outside:
Here we are at the starting point for the Terry Fox run.

"We felt happy and excited and a bit cold, but we did not lose hope!"

"Here we go!! The Terry Fox Run has started! YAYY!"
  • Afterwards, we came back inside and added up all the laps that everyone ran...

We used tallies to figure out the total laps ran by everyone in room 2...

It was fun, because we got to count by 5s. The total was 121! We are all very proud!

Reminders:
  • Please remember to bring library books back for Monday :)
  • Monday is Orange Shirt Day - please remember to wear an orange shirt if you have one.
  • We are hoping to harvest the vegetables in our Sun Circle garden on Monday if weather permits - please dress appropriately as we will be outside for the morning.

Week 4

Highlights:
  • Today, we had the opportunity to go into Mrs. S's class and meet the grade 5 and 6 students at our school. They are going to be our big buddies! They took us outside to go running and practice the Terry Fox route so that we know where to run on Friday!
  • We also had a special visitor: Mrs. Polski!

  • Mrs. Polski came to read us the story about Orange Shirt Day. It was about a girl that went to a residential school. At residential school, the girl was lonely and she felt that nobody was listening to her. Many things were taken away from her, including her orange shirt. Many people had to go to Residential school in Canada lost their language and understandings about their own cultures. So, Orange Shirt Day is a day for us to remember those children who went to residential schools and know how important it is to respect and care for everyone's differences and make sure we don't do something like this again in the future. We learned that we need to care for everyone. Every child matters.
  • In math we created bar graphs for our "Yes/No" graphs! We started by drawing the x- and y- axis in pencil then outlining it in marker. On the x-axis we put the "Yes" and "No" bars. On the y-axis we put numbers. Then we used the data from our "Yes/No" Survey to show it on the bar graph.

  • We have also been learning about Flexible Thinking this week! Superflex, which is a "Social Thinking" hero was introduced to us to teach us about different ways of thinking. Ask us about some of the "villains" in this story! We are all trying to be like Superflex and think and act in positive ways.

Week 3

Highlights:
  • We learned about Terry Fox and started running laps to prepare for the Terry Fox run!
  • For art, painted our Beebalm Bergamot flower sketch with water paints. We also went outside to sketch another flower, the Golden Rod!
  • We learned that you can mix colors to make new colors! This knowledge comes in very handy when painting our flowers. For example,
    • red + blue = purple
    • yellow + red = orange
    • blue + yellow = green
    • white + green = light green
    • purple + yellow; or blue + orange; or red + green = variations of brown
  • In science we learned about the parts of a plant - ask us about these!

  • For math we created our own survey questions and conducted them in class by asking all of the students a "yes" or "no" question.
  • Then, we learned about bar graphs and started preparing a bar graph using our survey data on large graphing paper. We also played math games where we practiced our knowledge of tallies an numerals using individual white boards.
  • We had our very first fire drill of the year and it was a great success because we made it outside quickly and quietly!
Reminders:
  • Meet, Greet and Learn is on Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm in Room 2

FAF # 2

Highlights:
  •  We continued on our journey of being junior biologists today! We started out in the Whispering Woods....
We were on a scavenger hunt in the Whispering Woods.
We had a list of different things (plants, flowers and trash) that we had to find in order to get more familiar with this area.
Here we were looking for the "treasures" during the scavenger hunt.

When we found weeds, like Dandelions, we picked them. We made sure not to blow on the white Dandelions because then the seeds of those weeds would blow in the wind and more weeds could grow.

Afterwards, we added to our art journals...
This time, we looked for the Bergomot flower and then sketched it in our journals.

We learned that the stems on these flowers had leaves. These petals are purple. Some of the petals were bending downwards and the petals felt a bit rigid. These petals are pointy and have tips that are v-shaped.

Here we are sketching the Bergamot. We made sure to sketch the petals with pointy tips so they looked like the real flower.

Reminders:
  • Please remember to bring library books back for Monday :)
  • Mrs. Yoon will be away on Monday, so Ms. Brunsch will be in as our guest teacher!
  • Meet, Greet and Learn evening will take place on September 19, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm in Room 2.  This evening will be a drop-in format for where families can meet the teacher and set learning goals, learn classroom routines and activities from the first few weeks of school.
  • No school for students on Friday, Sept. 20th.

Week 2

Highlights:
  • On Monday we started a new routine, where we drew a picture of a memory from the weekend and then write about it in our writing journals. We learned how to start the journal writing by using the following sentence starters:
  • For art and science we looked closely at the Great Blanket Flower and we used water-color paint to paint it. We started with the base and then started adding details:
  •  We also added colored dots to our Pop Art Portraits and then mounted them on black paper.
  • In math, we started learning about surveys and using tallies to record data. So, as a class we surveyed all the students to gather information about which hobbies were popular in the class. Using individual whiteboards, everyone got to practice making tallies to count how many people enjoyed participating in the different hobbies on our list. Here are the totals:

We took this data and plotted it into a pictograph. First we did a pictograph as a class using five random hobbies from the list:

Then, we each had the opportunity to create our own pictographs in our new math journals:

  • In science, we started our Flower Identification Booklets using the photos that we took on last Fresh Air Friday! We started by cutting and pasting in the flower photos into our books, then matching the names of the flowers to the pictures. We will be adding colors and descriptions to these flowers soon.

  • In gym we have been playing various cooperative games. Our favorites so far are: rock-paper-scissors tag, capture the bean bag, and ant tag!

Reminders:

  • School Council’s Welcome Back BBQ is Tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 12) from 5 pm to 7 pm
  • Meet, Greet and Learn evening will take place on September 19, 2019 from 5 pm to 7 pm in Room 2.  This evening will be a drop-in format for where families can meet the teacher and set learning goals, learn classroom routines and activities from the first few weeks of school.
  • On Friday is our second Fresh Air Friday, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.

FAF #1 - Plants and Land

Highlights:
  •  We were junior biologists today! We went outside to learn from the land and were finding various plants in our nature grounds! We talked about how plants, animals and insects all work together and help each other in different ways. First, we learned how to take good photos on the iPads of the plants ...

  • ...and then went to sketch a close up of a flower and did our best to add details:

  • We also found some grasshoppers who were blending into the long grass:
  • We also had our very first assembly this week and we learned about the 3 R's - ask us what this means!

Reminders:
  • The forms have a quick turn-around time and are due on Tuesday, September 10.  Each student’s name is located on the far left side of the top page of this package (on the Student Demographic Verification form). Start of Year packages with the Demographic Verification forms were sent home yesterday. Please review the Demographic Verification document, and if there are any changes, write them directly on the form.  Please sign the last page of this document.
