Sept. 30

Today was the Terry Fox Run! Before we ran we had a Terry Fox assembly lead by our grade 5 and 6 friends. Our class ran a total of 110 laps. That's 110Km! That's like running to Canmore! Our class did really really well, each person in our class ran at least 4km.

Please check your child's agenda for a photo form and a notice about next week's Fresh Air Friday activity!  This Friday we are planning to harvest our garden. We will start harvesting at about 9:45. If you have completed your volunteer forms and would like to join us please feel welcome!

Sept. 22

Today we kept working on our Natureground study. We sketched cone flowers. We also kept working on our Smarties graphing project and our All About Me posters. In gym we kept training for the Terry Fox run and then we played little chicks. Evelyn's brother was at the playground so he joined in!

Yesterday we made a team goal to be ready to listen more quickly. We did a good job working on that goal today. We were successful because we gave each other reminders about the goal, we made better seating choices and didn't sit beside people we often talk to, and we made sure to keep our eyes pointed on the speaker.  Well done!

Please remember Parent-Teacher conferences are on Thursday and Friday. We are also excited about the Book Fair!

Sept. 21

Today we started our new after recess routine. We will be doing 15 minutes of solo booktime after recess everyday. Some of us are ready to read books all by ourselves and the grade 2's are even reading chapter books! For those of us who are just learning how to read we are learning to read the pictures and to go on word-hunts to find the words that we can read. We had inside gym today. We played snowman tag and hotdog tag.

Today we did really great work but we ran out of time to complete some of our projects because it took us quite awhile to get ready and organized.  Our team goal for tomorrow is to get ready to listen quickly and to keep our eyes on the speaker.  We know we can do it!

Sept. 18

Today was Fresh Air Friday!

We had 3 stations that we got to try today.

Station #1: Planting Bulbs
Before we started planting we loosened the soil and pulled out the grasses, roots, and weeds. Then we learned how to dig a hole that was 15cm deep. We used rulers to measure the holes. Then we got to plant 5 bulbs in each hole. We found worms, ants, and some other insects while we were digging.
A great big thank you to Jung, Kelli, Jennifer, and Xun for coming to help us out and a big thank you to Claire's family for donating the bulbs!

Station #2: Natureground Sketching
We discovered some hare fur while we were sketching in the Natureground. We noticed that insects were attracted to the Goldenrod. There are still some wasps in the Natureground but we were careful to avoid them. We saw grasshoppers and other insects that are living in the Natureground.  We have a lot of plants that are still growing and quite a few flowers still in bloom.

Station #3: Whispering Signs Hunt
We searched all over the Whispering Woods and found lots of signs. The big Whispering Woods sign was the hardest to find because it was so far away. We also had trouble finding the "Z" sign because it was hiding in the amphitheatre! While we were hunting for signs we found a Pocket Gopher burrow. While Julia and Haotian were looking at the burrow the gopher peeked out to see them!

We are excited for the Welcome Back BBQ tonight!

Don't forget tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday. We will be working in the Natureground, Whispering Woods, and at the front of the school. Please dress for the weather.  If any parents would like to join us tomorrow we will be starting our work outside at approx. 9:45.

What a rainy day! Please remember to bring your raincoats and rain boots on rainy days. Some of us had very wet feet!

Today we had music with Mrs. Lim. We played the button game and we sang a snail song.  We had gym class inside because of the rain. We played tag and freeze dance. We also warmed up with some exercises.

We worked on our journals this morning. We do this at the start of every week. We worked on making our birthday graphs in math and then we worked on our All About Me posters this afternoon.

Important Info: We are going to be planting bulbs this Friday. If you have your security clearance completed and would like to come help out please let Ms. Boyer know.

Fresh Air Friday - Becoming Explorers of the World

Today we started looking at a great new book. It is called "How To Be An Explorer Of The World".

To start our day today we went on a native plant hunt in the Natureground. We noticed that bees are attracted to some plants more than others. They seemed to really love goldenrod. We learned to identify purple aster and white aster, wild blue flax, bergamot, yarrow, goldenrod, and cone flower.

We used Flower Power today to make some art. We used white fabric and we smashed flowers and other plants and the colours came out on our fabric. We discovered that when you pound the juice out of the flowers they dye the fabric. We didn't know that flowers had natural dye in them!

Sept. 10

Today we worked on our "colours in nature" project. We worked on naming our colours. We made leaf colour, wildrose colour, shadow colour, sky colour, grass colour, forest colour, emerald colour, slime colour, bluebell colour, sun colour and lots more.

When we were outside for gym we saw a Cat Faced Orb Spider! It was hiding between the two red sheds. It was very cool and soooo big!

Today we also added some new centres to our morning routine. We also had library this afternoon. Our library exchange day will be Thursdays this year. Please bring your books back every week.

Please remember to bring your labeled bag of flowers and grasses for our Fresh Air Friday project tomorrow. We will be working in the Natureground and in the Sun Circle.

We started a new poster project today. The posters will be all about us! We also started a birthday graph. We have already 4 birthdays in our classroom this year!

- Ask before you leave the classroom
- Be kind to nature

We are excited about having a GREAT year!

Today we went outside and learned about finding explorer spots. Explorer spots are places where we stay very still and try to notice what is around us. We went to the whispering woods today. We did a rainbow chip walk to look for colours. Then we did some painting inside.
