April 30

Highlights:
  • Math: we did addition and subtraction math challenges - 1 and 2 digit addition and subtraction.
  • Social Studies: we finished up our Paper-bag book center with Mrs. Armour creating the post-cards from the arctic. Then during catch-up time we worked on the other pages of the book:
  • Gym: we played a Capture the Frisbee with four different teams. Each of the four teams has a goal with a bunch of frisbees. You are not allowed to take frisbees away from people's hands but if it is in mid air then you can take it. The goal is to get as many frisbees into your own goal. You cannot move your feet once you have a frisbee in your hands. It really took a lot of coordination and cooperation because we were not allowed to call each others' names when passing the frisbee!
  • It was Nooray's last day at school today so we sang her "Happy Last Day Nooray Song" and then shared with her our favorite memories with her!

Reminders:
1. Special Helper for tomorrow is : Inaya (favorite game)
2. The in-school field trip about Acadia, by Teacher's Pet Educational Services, is on Thursday, May 2 from 9am to 11am. We are still needing 2 parent volunteers for this event - if you have police clearance and are available to volunteer please let me know :)

April 29

Highlights:
  • In the morning we had a surprise lock-down drill! Constable Rich came and reminded us of how important it is to remain QUIET and STILL during these drill so that we are ready if there ever was a real lock down. Also, we are not to listen to any announcements or open the door for anyone - unless it is after a police officer has come and visited our class.
  • Social Studies: we started our second round of Paper Bag centers - room 2 got to go to Mrs. Armour's class to work on "Here's What You Will See" - creating post cards with scenes from the arctic
  • We had a very important talk about snacks and sharing food - we are not allowed to share, take or give our snacks or lunch with other people because it can cause many problems
    1. unknown allergies
    2. other people around many want part of the snack as well but there might not be enough for everyone to eat it - it is not fair
    3. it might make people feel uncomfortable - someone might feel pressured to give up their snack/food even if they don't want to share it
  • We had the band students from Simon Fraser School come to perform at our school! It was really cool! They told a story and had the music to match along.

April 25 Saakokoto

Highlights:
  • Saakokoto came to visit our school and we had the opportunity to meet with him in the morning!
He talked about how Na'a (mother nature) has many colorful animals and gifts that she brings us in the spring. Then he shared a story about Eagle boy. From this story we learned about the importance of never giving up, the importance of kinship and family, and sharing.

  • Computers: we learned how to use Google Docs and Voice-to-Text, then we explored Google Slides and started creating a presentation of our choice. We played around with the features such as font, color, theme, adding pictures and text.
  • Math: We completed our Math Word Problem #4:
    Mike had 30 baby teeth.
In Kindergarten he lost 2 baby teeth.
Then, in grade 1 he lost 5 baby teeth.
Then in grade 2 he lost 7 baby teeth.
How many baby teeth did he lose in total? How many baby teeth does he have left in his mouth?
Strategies of using symbols, images and tallies were shared!
  • Gym: We played frisbee games with hoops - one game was like musical chairs,

the other one was with a partner and we practiced passing.

April. 24 - Environmental Awareness

Highlights:
  • SWC grade 12 students came to talk to us about how we can be more environmentally friendly by reducing our use of plastics:

We learned that there are a lot of plastics used to pack lunches ....

As a solution we should try to reduce our waste by using materials that can be reused or recycled

We also need to get more people to help out!

Here are some more suggestions:

  • We also got some great resources to help us get a head start:
Metal straws (there is free shipping until the end of April) - https://strawhutco.com/
Plastic-free YYC - https://plasticfreeyyc.com/
Crayola also has a marker recycling program- https://www.crayola.com/colorcycle.aspx
  • Social Studies - we started our "Here's what you need to know page" in our Arctic Collection Book - we created a page with different questions and answers about the life in the arctic.
  • Gym: we went outside to play frisbee with the portables - we played a game of frisbee-dodgeball and frisbee-soccer!

Reminders:
1. Special Helper for tomorrow is : Aksel (favorite game)
2. The Coffin Cares Assembly that was scheduled for Friday has been postponed until further notice - it will not be this Friday.
3. Thank you to the volunteers who have already signed up to help us out during Swimming - if there are any other male parents or guardians with police clearance available to volunteer for swimming please let me know.

  • Math: we finished up our Inuksuk Challenge and added backgrounds behind the Inuksuks.
  • Word Work: grade 1s worked on "-op family" words while the grade 2s were finishing up their "hard-o" sounding words and then silent reading.

April 18

Highlights:

  • Math: we continued working away at our Inuksuk Challenge - most people were able to finish up their write-up for it.
  • Computers: everyone got to log onto their Chromebooks and we experimented with Google slides - we learned how to "share" slides with Mrs. Yoon, change themes, add slides, add text, and add images.
  • Gym: we played "States of Matter" outside - everyone starts out as liquid molecules (walking around). Each player has the change to change into a different state: solid (stays still and does not move) or gas (moves around very fast - running). To change state, players get tagged by either a "fire" person (liquid into a gas, or solid into a liquid) or a "frost" person (gas into liquid, or liquid into a solid). Then we ended with games of Fruit Basket.

Reminders:

April 16

Highlights:
  • Math: we continued working on our Inuksuk Challenge! It is getting very tricky to try to fit all of our rocks within the parameters of the challenge - many of us are having to make our rocks larger so that we do not go over the 12 rock limit.
  • Science: we started assembling our Signs of Spring poster - with every image that we took from the FAF we added information about what it is and why it is a sign of spring. We also learned about working in a group and making sure everyone had a job and feels included. We will be working on this throughout the week.

  • Gym: to enjoy the nice weather we decided to play cooperative games outside! We ended up playing rounds of capture the flag. :)
  • Word Work - we were sorting a list of various words into two categories - Nouns & Verbs. We then cut & pasted these words into the table - some people decided to write them in.

  • Science: worked on finishing up our questions for our Arctic Buddy Challenge - we had to summarize things that worked well, things that could have been improved, discuss our roles & responsibilities in the experiment, and then think of ways we could do even better to work in a group next time.
  • Gym: parachute games - we played Cat & Mouse, then added extra challenges where the mice had to gather "cheese" under the parachute and the cats were stealing the cheese from the opposing teams.

April 12

Highlights:

  • We started our morning by creating our Signs of Spring posters using the photographs we took from last FAF. Then met with our big buddies to read with them and play some games.
  • Then for science we made repairs to our Arctic Buddies, then we went out to perform the water test on them.
  • We poured water on top of each Arctic Buddy:

  • Then we came back inside and cut them open and checked each layer to see how wet or dry they were!
Some table groups had wet water bottles while others had dry! This difference was due to the different materials and layers each group used! We are going to finish up our science discussion and write up next week.
