This morning we did centers and then we worked on our Smarties Graphs. We noticed that by putting our information in a graph it was a lot easier to read and to quickly understand. We will have them on display for our parent-teacher conferences.

After recess we had printing and wordwork and then we played a game called Guess Who with the teachers. The teachers made clues about themselves and we had to guess which teacher belonged with the clues.

After lunch we started our new study of colour. Today we talked about the primary colours and read a fun story. We also started a new page in our art journals about primary colours.

On Friday we will be performing the song "Waltzing Matilda" at the Remembrance Day Assembly. Here is the video we have been using for our practice. Please try to practice a few time at homes.

At the end of the day some of our friends from grade 5-6 came to talk to us about the Veteran's Food Bank Drive. For the next week we will be collecting non-parishable food items and other supplies for the Veteran's Food Bank.  Here are some ideas of things you could bring:

- Canned goods (soup, tuna, vegetables etc.)
- Peanut butter, jam etc.
- Pasta, Kraft Dinner, Dried soups, rice
- Pancake mix and syrup
- Coffee, Tea
- Oatmeal, cereal
- Toiletries (soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, kleenex, toilet paper)

Brrr it's cold out there!

This week our blog team is: Josie, Aiden, Ashton, Cedar, and Taylor.

This morning we started with journals. Lots of us went sledding and toboganing this weekend. Lots of us also stayed home and watched movies.

In word work, the grade 2's are doing a special project with the poem In Flander's Field. The grade 2's are practicing their printing and finger spaces by copying the poem and then they will work with a buddy to learn to recite the poem in a strong speaking voice. The grade 1's worked on printing the letter K.

After that we had math. Today we started learning about graphs. We are going to make smarties graphs using the charts we made last week. We learned that a good bar graph has to have a title, labels for the categories along the bottom, numbers up the sides, and neat towers or bars.

At lunch Josie was very excited because her tooth fell out! The rest of us were excited for the snow, but it took some of us a long time to get all of our outdoor gear on!

This afternoon we tried to finish up our Nose Hill posters. Today we focused on getting the facts and discoveries written down. Some of us got to work in the library, but only if we had most of our facts already recorded.

Parents: We will be having a home reading information meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 3:45. At the meeting we will talking about some small changes to the home reading program this year and we will provide some guidance for those parents who are planning to come in and volunteer.

November is here!

Before recess we did a game called get to know you. It was a game to help us get to know other people better. Each person got a page with ideas on it like "Has a birthday in July" and we had to find a person in our class that matched the idea. We had to keep asking each other questions until we had 2 names beside each idea on the page.

After recess we didn't do wordwork and printing. Instead we came up with the categories for our helper sharing. We will start having a special helper tomorrow. Then we worked to finish our 3D shapes reflection.

After lunch we worked on our Nose Hill posters. Ms. Boyer showed us her two posters. One that is a good example and one that isn't a very good example.  Ask me to explain why one of these posters is better than the other: 

In gym we worked with the scoops and balls. We warmed up our catches and throws and then we practiced picking up the ball without using our hands and only using the scoop. Then we played don't throw your junk in my backyard.

After gym we had some time to finish our leaf study. If we finished we got to have free time.

Lily is our first special helper of the year tomorrow. Lily will get to stand at the front of the line, sit on the special chair, help Ms. Boyer with special jobs, lead the warm up in gym, and bring sharing! Our category for sharing is: Favourite book. 

Happy Halloween!

Today we had a great day of Halloween activities. We started the day by drawing pictures of our costumes and then we did a journal entry about our costumes and Halloween plans.  After recess we did a counting challenge. When we figured out the final magic number we got to choose a treat! When we were finished the challenge we got to try a new math game called Boo Bump. We will have another chance to play the game tomorrow.

After lunch we all put on our costumes and had the Halloween Parade. Then we watched the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Then it was time for gym. We played a chasing game called "Star Light, Star Bright, Ghosties Won't Come Out Tonight". Then we had music.

Halloween Tomorrow!

This morning we started with journals. Today the grade 1's had to do 4 sentences grade 2's had to do 7 sentences because Ms. Boyer gave us the starting sentence as a freebie. The first sentence was "On Friday we went to Nose Hill." Then our job was to write about the things we saw on Nose Hill. We tried to use some of the plant names we have learned.

After recess we did a math reflection about our 3D shapes project. We had to write down which shapes we used and how many of each shape. The grade 1's had to shape words written for them and the grade 2's had to try to write the shape words on their own.  Then we had to choose one of our shapes and describe its edges, faces, and vertices.

This afternoon we worked on making posters to show our findings from our Nose Hill trip. Ms. Boyer showed us two examples of posters. One poster was a good example and one wasn't a very good example. We had to look carefully to figure out what made one poster better than the other. One of the things that made the poster good was its title. The good title was eye-catching and it gave our audience more information. Another thing was the pictures. In the good poster the pictures all had labels and interesting discoveries that we had made while we were on Nose Hill. After we figured out the things that make a good poster we got together in our groups and started working on our own posters.

Tomorrow is Halloween. Our classroom will be mostly business as usual in the morning but we will have a small halloween celebration in the afternoon. Students are invited to change into their costumes after they eat their lunch and we will all get to enjoy the Halloween parade and a short movie in the afternoon. 

Nose Hill Plant Hunt

Today was Fresh Air Friday! 

We went on a plant hunt at Nose Hill.  We were hunting for:

Wildrose Bushes (with Rosehips)

Buck Brush

Bergamot

Yarrow

Wild Sage

Aspen Trees

Wolf Willow

Canadian Thistle

Wild Blue Flax

We took photos on the iPads, made and recorded our observations, and collected some evidence in ziplock bags.  We worked in groups and made lots of discoveries!

Pyjama Day

Today was Pyjama Day! Lots of us chose to wear our PJ's and bring our stuffies with us to school.

We started the day with centers and then we read a perfect story for today called Pyjama Day! by Robert Munsch.  Our stuffies were allowed to join us at the carpet but only if they could be good listeners and didn't distract anyone. Most of the stuffies were very well behaved.

After the story we worked on our Buck Brush page. We are still working to finish writing all our facts. A few of us are finished writing the facts we learned as a class and have started doing some of our own research. Dhvani discovered that Buck Brush was used by the Blackfoot to make the shafts for their arrows.

After recess the grade 2's did some more practice with days of the week and months of the year and the grade 1's did printing (today's letter was I). Then we had our last math time to work on our shapes projects. Here are some photos of our work. Please notice how hard we are working to make our projects detailed and realistic. Please notice how many different types of 3D shapes we have used so that we can get to the center of the target!


After lunch we worked on our leaf study. Some of us were able to finish all of our sketches and labels today! Next week we will have one more day so that the rest of us can finish.

Then it was time for gym. We played with the scoops and balls and also played a special Pyjama Day tag game. By the time we were finished we were all tired and some of us were feeling sleepy because we were in our pyjamas. So we had to have a nap!!!

After our nap we went to music with Mr. O'Reilly. We are practicing our Fool song and today we practiced on our different instruments. Leander is playing drum, Senna is singing, and Liam and Addison are both playing xylophones. Everyone in our class plays an instrument or is a singer except for Shawn and Abdul Ahad are the camera and microphone people.

Tomorrow is Fresh Air Friday. We are going to Nose Hill. Please dress in layers so you are ready for all types of possible weather. Please bring a snack and a small water bottle that you can carry in your backpack. Please leave any extra things at home so you don't have a super heavy backpack to haul up Nose Hill.
