June 12

Highlights:
  • For science we are now learning about how to design for movement in boats.
    • For the first design, we had to create the base of a paddle boat. Paddle boats work by having a paddle wheel turn underneath the boat, pushing the water and moving the boat. We used popsicle sicks to create the frame, and tomorrow we will be adding a paddle made out of styrofoam plates and elastic bands.
      • Which paddle boat base design do you think will work the best?

    • We are also creating sailboats, which uses the force of the wind against the sail to push the boat. Today, in our groups, we discussed how different shapes and sizes might function. Then, we each selected a sail design and cut it out of construction paper. Tomorrow we will be attaching these to the base of our boats and testing them to see which design worked best.
      • Which sail design do you think will work the best? Why?
