June 6

Highlights:
  • As our final lesson on stability, we learned about catamaran boats. This type of boat features two parallel hulls of equal size! The catamaran boats are wider than boats with a keel. This wider stance in the water helps to balance more weight and keep it very stable in the water.
  • We got the opportunity to make our own catamaran boats in groups of 3 or 4.
  • Here are some of photos and commentary from the students:
<"So, basically all we did for attaching the popsicle sticks (so can I get the thing and show it?... yes) so we put the popsicle stick like that [demonstrates] and put the elastic band over the popsicle stick like that [demonstrated with bottle and stick] and then we did that again and again! So it was a little bit of a pattern!" "And ours held ... umm..150 pennies and a stapler!" >
<"So we took styrofoam plates to make a catamaran, and then we put pennies there and there [plates]!">

... <"It total it held 187 pennies!">
<This one, we put 2 plastic jars on the bottom, and we used some straws for the net, and we used those sticks for a triangle shape to hold it down.">
<"One side tipped a little bit over in the water and this one could hold 100 pennies!">

<"We took the styrofoam plates, 4 milk cartons, and 1 small cream carton. We stuck the smaller carton to the larger cartons and we took 2 other large cartons for the bottom. We taped 2 straws on the sides. Then we taped it all together.>

<This was from room 1!.>

<"The tape did not work in our design because it fell apart when the water touched it!">

<"Team work makes the dream work!">
