Measurement and Planting!

Highlights:
  • We worked on our Nova Scotia research and pamphlets to start the morning because it was raining.

    • Then, when the rain cleared up we went outside to plant beets!
To do this we had to follow the following steps:
      1. Loosen the soil and then spread it flat.
      2. Make lines in the dirt for the seeds to go in, about 30 cm (a ruler size) apart.
      3. Place the seeds in about 8cm apart - we used the size of about one of our hands to do this.
      4. Then we covered it with dirt and patted it down.

    • We also started our new unit in math, *Measurement*
      • After talking about standard units of measurement, and looking at centimeters, millimeters and decimeters on a ruler, we decided to use non-standard units of measurement to measure the following things:
        • Distance around the Whispering Woods
        • Distance through the center of the Whispering Woods
        • Distance around the field
      • We made 2 predictions:
        1.  the distance around the Whispering Woods is greater than the distance through the Whispering Woods
        2. the the distance around the Whispering Woods is less than the distance around the field
      • Everyone was paired up and counted the number of walking steps to measure and compare these things.
      • Here was the data we collected:

Number of walking Steps Distance around Whispering Woods Distance through of Whispering Woods Distance around Field
    560 104 650
    561 159 665
    580 146 700
    562 107 670
    590 150 659
    580 130 700
    349 101 677
    650 108 838
    387 100 400
    Average 535 123 662
    • We were correct about both of our predictions! The distance around the Whispering Woods was greater than the distance through of the Whispering Woods, and the distance around the Whispering Woods was less than the distance around the field!
