May 31

Highlights:

  • Since the air was full of smoke, we stayed inside today.  We met with our big buddies in the morning to share our Arctic Story Map
  • Then we finished our Bluenose Schooner painting

  • Finally we started our boat building by making a boat that had stability
    • we started with a cork boat that had a sail
Unfortunately it tipped over and the sail side fell into the water.
    • Then we added a keel (which was made out of plasticine to the bottom of the cork boat)

This time it floated upright

  • we learned that the keel add weight to the bottom of the boat to counterbalance  the weight of the boat and sail
Interestingly though, some of the keel boats did not work - they still tipped over. We think this was because the keels were crooked when they were attached. But, when we attached the keel closer to the cork base it was able to stand upright because it was more balanced.

May 30

Highlights:
  • We started our Bluenose Schooner water color paintings

  • We worked on our editing skills by editing a sample journal entry that Mrs. Yoon created - we had to highlight the upper-case and lower-case mistakes in yellow, underline and correct the spelling mistakes or punctuation in red, and then add "juicy words" and extra details in blue!
  • Math: students who went to room 1 continued on with playing their math game with dominos building a clock; students who went to the portables were given images of base ten blocks and had to count them then write the number. They also had to look at an addition sentence and fill in the missing number; students in room 2 played race to 100 with place value tables and base ten blocks.
  • For computers we learned how to search key words into Google to find information about Nova Scotia for our pamphlets.

May 29

Highlights:
  • In Math: students who went to the portables worked in pairs to create numbers using hundreds blocks, tens blocks, and ones blocks.  Students who went to room 1 used dominos to play a game with a partner where you build a clock by flipping over the dominos and calculating the sum on the domino - whoever finishes the clock first wins. Students who stayed in room 2 learned about "equal to", "not equal to", "greater than", and "less than" and used individual white boards to draw these symbols to the images of base ten blocks and numbers that were shown on the smartboard.
  • Social Studies: we started our pamphlets for Nova Scotia - we are imagining that we are marketers and we are trying to attract tourists to Nova Scotia. We are including various facts and information about Nova Scotia such as: food, music, weather, activities, attractions to see/visit, and reminders.
  • In Gym: we had fitness centers outside to enjoy the sun! One fitness center was on the playground, climbing up the various ladders and then slid down the slide, then repeated this in order to exercise our leg muscles. Another center was monkey bars and bench push-up to exercise our arm muscles. We also did skipping ropes to for some cardio exercise. Another center was lunges and running. The last center was making skipping and hopping patters on the hoops.

May 28

Highlights:
  • This morning we started the day with a Coffin Cares Assembly and we learned:
    • not to put trash on the ground or in the wrong bins!
    • the grade 3/4 Green Team discovered that there were LOTS of one-use-snack wrappers and plastic ziplock bags on the field!!!
    • to help out we should pick up things that are littered (unless they look dangerous, like needles, syringes, and other suspicious items) and dispose of them properly even if they did not come from us
  • In Math: students who went to the portables used base-10 blocks and worked in pairs to create numbers (from 1-100) that were given. Students who went to room 1 continued to finish up their doubles-facts flip-books. Students who stayed in room 2 learned about grouping to the hundreds place.
  • For word work we worked on editing our journal entries from Monday
Reminders:
1. Special Helper for Tomorrow is Kais (favorite game)
2. Those students who chose to take home their Arctic Story Maps - must remember to return it tomorrow!
3. Some students have decided to take their journals home - please remember to bring them back tomorrow!

May 27

Highlights:
  • For gym we played "Port to Starboard" and had some relay races such as leap frog
  • We took our whole school photo outside on the playground - order forms for these photos are being sent home today
  • We read Fiddles and Spoons and learned about the Acadians and the Expulsion (which is when the Acadians were forced out of their homes). We also learned about Acadian way of life, such as:
    • clothing: linen dresses, aprons, wooden sabots
    • jobs for men and women in the Acadian villages
    • food: corn bread, chicken fricot, meat pie, apple tarts

May 24 - Making Things Float

Highlights:

  • We looked closer at the parts of the Bluenose and added those details to our sketches

  • Then, we went outside to pull out dandelion weeds in the Nature Grounds because we learned that they spread and take nutrients in the soil away from the other plants.

  • Next, we read "Who Sank the Boat?" and talked about the importance of maintaining level and balance when building a boat to make sure the boat doesn't tip one way or the other
  • Finally, we were tasked with creating a boat that floats out of plasticine through trial and error -we were not given any instructions except that we could only use the plasticine.

    • We found that once the plasticine was flattened and thinned out with even and balanced edges, it was able to float. This is because the weight is distributed on more surface area.
    • We also found out that there can be no gaps because water will seep in.

May 23

Highlights:
  • Writing & Word Work - we did an activity with editing by adding "juicy words" (descriptions and details to make the journal)
  • Math: Students in the portables used two dice to roll numbers and then find the sum. In room 1 students continued on with their word of the doubles facts (flip-books). Students in room 2 went over the answers to our 2-digit addition sentence questions from last class and discussed common mistakes.
  • Art / Computer: We researched the Blue Nose Schooner because we are studying Nova Scotia for Social Studies. Then, we drew the schooner and colored it in our art journals.
  • Gym: we went out on the field to play "Port to Starboard" which pairs nicely with our investigation of the Blue Nose Schooner.

May 22 - Glenbow Field Trip Day

Today we went on a field trip to the Glenbow Museum!

Blackfoot elder, Sheldon, took us through the part of the museum with Blackfoot artifacts.
We started with drawing shapes that represented different symbols and meanings.

We went on a scavenger hunt for different symbols in the museum.
Elder Sheldon also told us stories.

Finally we learned how to use Blackfoot symbols to create words.

After lunch, we checked out the Inuit corner ("blue corner"):

We tried playing the stick and bone game that taught you skills such as: hand-eye-coordination, precision, and patience. These skills can be useful for hunting.

We also looked at authentic Inuit artifacts...

 This is for catching birds
We thought it was sooooo cool

This was used for pounding blubber

This one is used to build fire

This was used to cut ice

Reminders:
1. Tomorrow is Fun Lunch!
2. Special Helper for tomorrow will be Enxin
3. Remember to bring library books that need to be returned tomorrow
